Happy Halloween!

Tonight between 6 pm and 8 pm, our little ghosts and goblins will be haunting our neighborhood.  The weather is supposed to be nice this year, thank God! No rain, no snow, but it will be chilly.  I'll post some pictures for you tomorrow.

TEXAS RANGERS

Next Game: Sat, 10/30/2010 @ Rangers Ballpark in Arlington
5:30 PM CT (6:30 PM ET)

2-0      0-2

I know where we'll be Saturday night - in front of the TV!  This is Doug's favorite team (after the Detroit Tigers) and he was sooo happy they got to the World Series!

(texasrangers.com)

It was funny during the playoffs, he was rooting for the Giants and I was pulling for the Phillies.  He looked at me in amazement and said, "don't tell me you want the Phillies to win!"  Now I've liked the Phillies since the 70s and don't care anything for the Giants!

"Why?" I asked.  He said if the Giants won, the Rangers had a better chance of beating them, than the Phillies.  Made sense, but I still wanted the Phillies to win. Oh, well.  Hope the Rangers can pull this off once they're back in Arlington, TEXAS!!!

Pumpkin Roll - Oktoberfest 1st Place Winner

Hey there!  We having a recipe linky party at the Bloggerette Society this week.  I think I'll link this recipe for my Pumpkin Roll that's a family favorite!  I don't have a photo of it, but here's the recipe anyway!

Back in 2002, I entered our Oktoberfest cake and/or pie contest.  I'd found the recipe in an old regional cookbook and thought I'd give it a try.  It turned out perfectly the first time!  It was one entry among many the judges enjoyed at the the tasting - guess you could say it was their #1 favorite!  I had to make it for our family Thanksgiving dinner that year.  Here's the recipe  -  enjoy!

Take care and God Bless!

Craft with Confidence: Sock Monkey Tutorial

Craft with Confidence: Sock Monkey Tutorial

Here's a link for a tutorial on making the familiar sock monkey, with a twist!  It doesn't have to be brown, white, and orangish-red!  Cute idea and great tutorial!  Thanks Vivian!

Little Big Horn

Getting back to our trip out West...

We stopped on the way back from Seattle at the Little Big Horn - Custer's Last Stand!  We were so amazed that there was a National Cemetery there also.  Any serviceman/woman and their family is eligible for burial here.  It was quite moving, to say the least.

This was so sad!  The soldiers were originally buried where they fell.

The marker with the black shield is where George Armstrong Custer fell.

Custer's marker surrounded by his men.

There were two other battlefields, lead by Benteen and Reno,  about 5 miles from here that fared a little better than the soldiers under Custer's command.

You can see a lone white marker in the distance.

The remains of these brave soldiers, led by an egotistical, narcissistic fame-seeking commander, were removed to a common grave above this fenced-in area.

Their names, rank, and position are listed on all four sides of this monument.  George Armstrong Custer's remains were removed to and buried at West Point.

Here are a couple of pictures of us below the battlefield.

Doug and Joy, again

There was an exhibit that housed items/articles found during archaeology digs on the battlefield.  The following photos were taken by Kathy inside the exhibit building. Besides artifacts found on the battlefield, there are some G A Custer's personal items, such as his uniforms, hairbrushes, shaving items, pocket diary, and a trunk he used while at West Point.

Barbaric weapons used by the Indians.

Facial reconstruction was done on a couple of the skulls found on the battlefield.  One of the soldiers was identified by comparing the reconstructed face with a photograph.  The other soldier is still unknown.

The horses, which were ordered shot by Custer to use as shields against the Indians, were also given their own burial marker.

As I noted earlier, this was a very sad scene.  Certainly an experience we won't forget.

More later, really!

Hugs and Kisses,

Joy
